A FEW YEARS AGO, as I was relocating from Houston to Bastrop, a murder occurred that occupied the next year and a half of my life and opened my eyes to a nationwide epidemic of missing persons and unidentified human remains. On July 4, 2005, human remains were found at a rural illegal dumping area close to the Travis County line. The remains had been scattered by scavengers, but investigators were fortunate to recover a large portion. We had no idea whose body it was, although its condition suggested that it had not been exposed to the elements for very long.
